Most people live inside their thoughts the way a fish lives inside water — completely surrounded, and completely unaware of it. The first act of mental transformation is not changing a single thought. It is stepping back far enough to see a thought at all.

The observer position

Sit somewhere quiet for two minutes and simply notice what your mind produces. Plans, worries, fragments of songs, judgements about this exercise. You are not trying to stop any of it. You are learning that thoughts are events that happen in you, not commands issued by you.

Why this matters

Every practice in this course — reframing, focus, emotional steadiness — depends on this one skill. A thought you can observe is a thought you can choose not to obey.
